Making Sense of What's Beneath | Psychodynamic Counselling in London
“Our feelings are our most genuine paths to knowledge”
Sometimes something comes out of the blue, difficult things from the past begin to surface, or many small things build up and overwhelm us. We feel anxious, low, or angry. Sometimes we simply don’t feel right but we don’t know why. Whatever’s going on for you right now, talking can help. By thinking together about the difficulties you’re experiencing, we can come to a greater understanding of what lies beneath. We can identify default patterns and find empathy and compassion.
Understanding and insight can lead to resilience and the potential for change.
I work psychodynamically, which means I believe that our current difficulties often have echoes or origins in our earliest experiences. We may not consciously remember them, but these experiences leave imprints and templates which shape how we relate to others and how we cope with difficulties. Sometimes these templates no longer serve us; by noticing and understanding them, we can begin to make adaptations which serve us better. I work with gentleness and curiosity, by your side, and at a pace directed by you. This means that even though difficult emotions may arise in counselling, together we can make sense of them.
We all seek counselling for different reasons.
How I can support you
I am a trained psychodynamic counsellor with experience supporting many different individuals with a range of issues. I’m professionally registered with the BACP and abide by the highest ethical, legal, and professional frameworks. I work with regular clinical supervision and am in ongoing therapy myself. I strive to deliver an inclusive, equitable, confidential, and empathic service.
I have experience working with:
Abortion • Anger Management • Anxiety • Autism • Baby & Pregnancy Loss • Bereavement • Bereavement by Suicide • Body Image • BPD • Chronic Illness • Chronic Pain • Coercive Control • Depression • Domestic Abuse • Divorce • GAD • Gender Identity • Geriatric and Seniors • Hoarding • Infertility • Neurodivergence • OCD • Parenting • Perimenopause • Perinatal • Racial Identity • Relationship Issues • Self Esteem • Self Harm • Sexual identity • Suicidal Ideation • Trauma • Women’s Issues •
The problems we carry are often complex, contradictory and interconnected, so though you may identify with one or more of the issues listed, often the work can be deeper and more wide-ranging.
What to expect from counselling with me
-
If you would like to get in touch, we can arrange a free fifteen-minute phone call. This is an opportunity for both of us to see if we would be a good ‘fit’.
-
If we decide to go ahead, we can book in an initial meeting. In this, I will ask you about the difficulties you are facing, and a bit about your background and early experiences. It’s an opportunity for us to discuss how the counselling will work, and for you to raise any questions or concerns.
-
From there, we begin. The sessions will be led by you, with gentle and curious questions from me to prompt further thought. Therapy can seem daunting, and it is true that sometimes strong emotions come to the surface which have been long buried. It’s not a quick or easy ‘fix’. It’s a steady, meandering course towards greater self-understanding and acceptance.
Sessions, Location & Fees
I offer ongoing, open-ended counselling, and time limited counselling (up to 12 sessions)
I see clients from consulting rooms in Highgate and Liverpool Street, and remotely via Teams.
My fee is £65/session.
I reserve a certain number of sessions for students and new graduates in the creative arts at a discounted rate.
Working with Performers & Creatives
I am committed to supporting the mental health of performers and creatives. Prior to training as a counsellor, my career was in the creative arts, and so I understand the particular and unique challenges of often precarious freelance work.
I can support with issues of identity, self-worth, rejection, and vulnerability that often accompany a career in the arts. I can also support performers and creatives with issues that are not directly related to their work, where my knowledge of the vocational context can deepen my empathy and understanding.
Performers and creatives often face damaging myths and assumptions about their lives and careers; this can arise in the counselling context too. Because of my background, we can begin work together with a shared understanding of the realities of the arts industries, and get to the heart of what’s troubling you.
I work with a number of arts institutions, including the National Theatre.
You can contact me via email or telephone, I endeavour to respond within 24 hours.
